What are bed rails… and what is a grab bar?

Man installing a rented adjustable hospital bed in London

Please note we do not provide grab rails as standard.

The standard electric beds we rent are widely regarded as being straightforward to operate. Having a hospital bed in your home can at first seem daunting but we generally find that after a short demonstration, our customers immediately become comfortable with the equipment.

Two pieces of equipment that can sometime cause misunderstanding are the bed rails and a grab bar.

All the beds we provide come with bed rails as standard for both sides of the bed. We do not provide grab rails as standard but if you would like a grab bar please ask and we will do our best to provide one.

Side rails prevent the user from falling out of the bed.

A grab rail enables the user to pull themselves upright on the bed.

You will see photos of side rails on many of the beds on our website. These are the wooden rails that run along the length of the bed. They are easy to use and can be raised and lowered using the handles on the upper rail and a simple click mechanism.

Grab rails are clamped to the steel base of the bed. They can be adjusted to be put on the left- or right-hand side and moved up or down to meet the user’s preference. Many users find that the electric movement of the bed provides sufficient assistance, but if you would like a grab please ask and we will do our best to provide one.
